About This Approach

What is Neuropsychotherapy?

Neuropsychotherapy is a holistic, brain-informed approach to mental health that recognises the intricate connection between the brain, the body, and psychological wellbeing. It integrates the principles of neuroscience with evidence-based psychotherapy to understand and treat the neurobiological factors that contribute to mental health difficulties.

At its core, neuropsychotherapy is based on the understanding that changes in the brain — whether through injury, illness, neurodevelopmental differences, or the effects of trauma and chronic stress — can profoundly affect thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. By addressing these neurobiological factors alongside psychological ones, neuropsychotherapy offers a more comprehensive pathway to healing and improved functioning.

Our clinical neuropsychologists at Sunshine Coast Psychology Clinic combine thorough neuropsychological assessment with tailored therapeutic interventions — helping each individual understand their brain, adapt to its challenges, and build on its strengths.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a neuropsychologist and a psychologist? +
A clinical neuropsychologist is a registered psychologist with specialist postgraduate training in the relationship between brain function and behaviour. They are specifically trained to assess and treat cognitive, emotional, and behavioural difficulties arising from neurological conditions, brain injuries, and neurodevelopmental disorders. All psychologists at SCPC are registered with AHPRA.
Do I need a referral for neuropsychotherapy? +
You do not need a referral to self-refer to our clinic. However, a GP referral under a Mental Health Care Plan (for Medicare rebates) or a referral from a neurologist or specialist can be helpful. NDIS participants can access our services through their NDIS plan. Contact our admin team to discuss the best pathway for your situation.
Is NDIS funding available for neuropsychological services? +
Yes — NDIS participants with "Improved Daily Living" or "Support Coordination" funding may be able to access neuropsychological assessment and therapy through their NDIS plan. We are experienced in working with NDIS participants and can provide NDIS-compliant reports and service agreements. Contact our admin team to discuss your specific funding situation.
Can neuropsychotherapy help after a stroke or brain injury? +
Yes — neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation are a core part of recovery following stroke or acquired brain injury. Our neuropsychologists can assess the cognitive and emotional impacts of the injury, provide a detailed report for your treating team, and deliver cognitive rehabilitation and psychological therapy to support your recovery and quality of life.
Is DVA funding available? +
Yes — DVA (Department of Veterans' Affairs) funding is available for eligible veterans for both psychological therapy and neuropsychological assessment. Contact our admin team to discuss your DVA entitlements and how we can support you.
