At Sunshine Coast Psychology Clinic, our experienced psychologists guide you on a transformative journey of self-discovery and lasting healing.

About This Therapy

What is Schema Therapy?

Schema Therapy is an innovative and holistic approach to psychotherapy that delves deep into the core beliefs and emotional patterns that shape our lives. Developed by Dr Jeffrey Young, it helps individuals identify and transform maladaptive schemas — deep-seated negative beliefs developed in early life when fundamental emotional needs were not adequately met.

By addressing these schemas and fostering emotional regulation, healthier relationships, and lasting change, Schema Therapy empowers individuals to break free from long-standing emotional difficulties and live more fulfilling lives. It integrates elements of CBT, attachment theory, Gestalt therapy, and psychodynamic approaches into one cohesive model.

The Schema Model

Understanding Schema Modes

Schema Therapy works with "modes" — the different emotional states and coping styles we shift between. Understanding your modes is a key part of the healing process.

CHILD

Child Modes

Vulnerable, angry, impulsive, or happy child states that reflect unmet emotional needs from childhood. These modes often drive our most intense emotional reactions.

COPE

Coping Modes

Strategies we developed to manage painful schemas — including surrendering, avoiding, or overcompensating. These once protected us but now often cause problems.

CRITIC

Inner Critic Modes

The internalised voices of critical or demanding parents — the punitive critic, the demanding critic — that generate shame, guilt, and self-attack.

ADULT

Healthy Adult Mode

The goal of Schema Therapy — a compassionate, wise, and balanced part of yourself that can meet your needs, set limits on unhealthy modes, and nurture your inner child.

SCHEMA

Early Maladaptive Schemas

Deep-rooted beliefs about yourself and the world formed in childhood — such as abandonment, defectiveness, mistrust, or emotional deprivation — that drive distress in adult life.

NEEDS

Core Emotional Needs

Schema Therapy identifies five core emotional needs — safety, autonomy, love, self-expression, and realistic limits — and works to help you meet these needs in healthy ways.

The Process

How Schema Therapy Works at Our Clinic

Schema Therapy is a collaborative, compassionate process. Here is what you can expect from your journey with us.

1

Schema Assessment

A thorough assessment identifies your specific schemas, modes, and coping strategies. Your psychologist helps you understand the origins of these patterns and how they affect your life today.

2

Psychoeducation

You learn about Schema Therapy, your identified schemas and modes, and how they developed. Understanding your patterns is a powerful first step toward changing them.

3

Schema Healing

Using cognitive, experiential, and behavioural techniques — including imagery rescripting, chair work, and limited reparenting — your psychologist helps you heal and transform your schemas.

4

Healthy Adult Strengthening

The goal is to strengthen your Healthy Adult mode — so you can meet your own needs, set healthy limits, and respond to life's challenges with compassion and wisdom.

Why Schema Therapy

How Schema Therapy Will Benefit You

Schema Therapy offers profound and lasting benefits, particularly for those who have struggled with chronic or recurring difficulties.

HEAL

Heal the Root Causes

Rather than managing symptoms, Schema Therapy addresses the underlying emotional wounds that drive distress — creating deeper, more lasting change than surface-level approaches.

RELATE

Improve Relationships

By understanding how your schemas affect your relationships, you can break free from recurring patterns and build more secure, fulfilling connections with others.

SELF

Build Self-Compassion

Schema Therapy helps you develop a kinder, more compassionate relationship with yourself — replacing the inner critic with a nurturing, supportive inner voice.

GROW

Achieve Lasting Growth

The changes achieved through Schema Therapy tend to be deep and durable — because they address the core beliefs and patterns that have shaped your life, not just the symptoms.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Schema Therapy

How long does Schema Therapy take? +
Schema Therapy is typically a longer-term therapy, often ranging from 20 to 50 or more sessions depending on the complexity of your concerns and your goals. Because it addresses deep-seated patterns, it takes more time than brief therapies — but the changes tend to be more profound and lasting. Your psychologist will discuss a recommended plan with you after the initial assessment.
Is Schema Therapy the same as CBT? +
No — although Schema Therapy incorporates some CBT techniques, it goes much deeper. CBT focuses primarily on changing current thoughts and behaviours. Schema Therapy explores the origins of those patterns in early life experiences and uses experiential techniques (such as imagery and chair work) to heal the emotional wounds that drive them. Many clients find Schema Therapy helpful after CBT has provided some relief but not addressed the deeper layer.
Do I need a referral for Schema Therapy? +
No referral is required to book an appointment. However, if you would like to access Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan, you will need a referral from your GP. We recommend speaking with your GP before your first appointment if you wish to use Medicare.
What does a Schema Therapy session look like? +
Sessions are warm, collaborative, and experiential. Your psychologist may use a range of techniques including talking through your experiences, imagery rescripting (revisiting and healing past memories in imagination), chair work (dialoguing between different parts of yourself), and practical exercises to strengthen your Healthy Adult mode. Sessions are always paced to your comfort and readiness.
Is Schema Therapy available via Telehealth? +
Yes. Schema Therapy sessions are available via secure video call. While some clients prefer the in-person experience for this type of deeper work, Telehealth is a fully effective option and Medicare rebates apply to eligible Telehealth sessions.
Can Schema Therapy help with personality disorders? +
Yes — Schema Therapy was originally developed specifically for personality disorders and has one of the strongest evidence bases for conditions such as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Avoidant Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and others. It is considered a first-line treatment for BPD in many international clinical guidelines.
