What is Trauma?

When an Event Overwhelms Your Ability to Cope

Psychological trauma is a response to a deeply distressing or life-threatening event. While many people experience difficult events, trauma occurs when the experience overwhelms your ability to cope, leaving you feeling helpless and unsafe. The effects can be long-lasting, changing how you see yourself, others, and the world.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a specific psychiatric disorder that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. However, not everyone who experiences trauma will develop PTSD.
